There is always something to do when visiting the area with Mackay’s Special Events calendar guaranteed to suit visitors and locals.

Festivals

Mackay’s Festival of Arts every July is a jam packed program of artistic talent. The Aero Club Mechanos, and the Sarina Coconut Festival are major draw cards for visitors. So are the Grasstree Beach Motorcycle Races, Mackay’s Blue Water Fling and Global Grooves. Likewise Mackay, Sarina and Finch Hatton Shows are favorite events for children of all ages.

Theatre & Arts

A variety of artists visit Mackay to perform at the Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre.  These artists include dancers, comedians, and actors. BB Print Stadium also hosts national and international artists.  Most noteworthy we have had Elton John, Birds of Tokyo, Living End and Pete Murray all perform at BB Print Stadium. Artspace Mackay showcases fine arts, as well as sculpture, pottery and other creative mediums. Music festivals include Grass on the Green, Wintermoon and TimberFest. 

Sports

National and International Sporting events are often held in our region including Cricket, Rugby, Soccer and Hockey. From Bird-watching Festivals, River to Reef Charity Rides, PRB Bull Riding, and QLD Kart Championships.

Fishing is excellent in the Mackay Region. As a result special fishing events include Barramundi Fishing Tournaments and the World Sooty Championship held over the May Day long weekend at the picturesque Eungella Dam. Come and compete in the only fishing competition specifically targeting the native Sooty Grunter.

Conferences & Expos

Mackay also plays host to a number of major Conferences and Expos. This includes Wedding Expos, Travel Expos, the Queensland Mining Expo held at the Mackay Showgrounds in late July every 2nd year, and the Mackay Home Show & Caravan and Camping Expo.

Local Tours

Local businesses run a number of Tours/Activities for visitors and locals. These include miniature sugar mill tours with rum tastings, riding on a zip line through a tropical rain-forest, to paddle board lessons, tours of historic homes and Cable Park Wake Boarding to the unique experience of scuba diving with platypus and the amazing Tiger Moth Joy Flights.

Nature also does Mackay proud with Whale Watching Season and Turtle Nesting as well as Migratory Shore Birds, Wallabies on the beach at Cape Hillsborough and Platypus in their natural environment at Eungella National Park.
