The Shores Holiday Apartments provides fully self-contained accommodation on the beach at Blacks Beach, in the Northern Beaches of Mackay. Our facilities are for the use of holiday guests, residents and their visitors. We are committed to playing a role in the global quest for a more equal, inclusive and sustainable world.
We do this by providing an experience for our guests which is healthy, clean, green and sustainable. Our beachfront location provides our guests with the opportunity to get close to nature whilst staying in a traditional, residential suburb. We consistently strive for improvements in our environmental management practices whilst also being cognizant of the increasing demands of our guests, our unit owners, our staff, our local council as custodians of our beach foreshore, and our financial sustainability. We want our guests to better understand and recognize the relationship between sustainable tourism and environmental protection and that both can be achieved in harmony.
A variety of methods are used to reduce energy consumption at The Shores Holiday Apartments. Over 36% of units have grid connected Solar Panels to provide green electricity and offset electricity costs. Windows and sliding doors in the office have solar tinting to help protect the office from the heat and glare of the afternoon sun.
21 units have polyester/foil ceiling batts with a R-Value of 3.5 in their roofs to assist in improving the energy efficiency of the units. The office also has ceiling insulation.
Water saving fittings are used for showers and taps throughout the property and toilets have dual flush water saving cisterns.
We are committed to minimizing waste generation by reducing, reusing, and recycling products and materials when it does not compromise the health and safety of our guests and staff.
Palm fronds, leaves, weeds, and other green waste are disposed of through a weekly large skip Green Waste collection service. Several wheelie bins with yellow lids, located in prime positions around the grounds are for the disposal of recyclable domestic garbage. A small recyclable skip with a yellow lid is also provided for the disposal of larger recyclable items including cardboard and packaging materials as well as recyclable material from the office.
General household waste from units is disposed of in green wheelie bins placed in positions convenient for guests.
We educate and inform guests on local wildlife, the need to observe and protect marine turtle nesting and hatching, migratory shore birds, goannas, possums and snakes. Flat-back Turtles nest on Blacks Beach between mid-October and January with hatchlings merging between December and the end of March.
We also work with Mackay Regional Council to sustainably manage the adjacent beach foreshore in accordance with the Blacks Beach Local Coastal Plan 2017. Council also provides interpretative signage at the viewing platform at The Shores entrance to the beach so we can educate locals and visitors about local conservation.
