Nature Reserved at The Shores
The Shores Holiday Apartments is home to a wide range of flora and fauna.
Goannas can often be spotted lazing around the grounds, including Wiggy, Uncle Stumpy and Ziggy who also enjoy digging in the gardens. Marine Flatback Turtles nest on Blacks Beach between October and January and the hatchlings emerge from December to the end of March. These sea turtles are a protected species. Humpback whales pass Blacks Beach on their way north each winter and can be glimpsed from The Shores beach between July and September.
A wide variety of birds call The Shores home. Species include Oystercatchers, Rainbow Lorikeets, tiny Sunbirds, Tawny Frogmouths, Kookaburras, Plovers and Red Tail Black Cockatoos as well as the visiting Migratory Shore Birds.
The lush, green gardens around The Shores are planted with tropical species including an array of unusual and colorful flowering plants as well as the traditional palm trees.
