There is always something special happening in Mackay to suit visitors and locals alike. Mackay's Festival of Arts every July is a jam packed program of artistic talent sure to please. The Aero Club Mechanos, and the Sarina Coconut Festival, are major draw cards for visitors every August. In September the region plays host to the Grasstree Beach Motorcycle Races and Mackay's Blue Water Fling. Mackay and Finch Hatton Shows are always favorite events for children of all ages in June.
Theatre Performances at the MECC (Mackay Entertainment Convention Centre), BB Print Stadium, and Creative Arts at Artspace Mackay also dominate the events calendar. Music festivals include Grass on the Green, Wintermoon and TimberFest.

Local businesses run a number of Tours/Activities for visitors and locals. These include minature sugar mill tours with rum tastings, riding on a zip line through a tropical rainforest, to paddle board lessons, tours of historic homes and Cable Park Wake Boarding and the unique scuba diving with platypus.
Nature also does Mackay proud with Whale Watching Season and Turtle Nesting as well as Migratory Shore Birds, Wallabies on the beach at Cape Hillsborough and Platypus in their natural environment at Eungella National Park.
